Tv repoters and photographers were invited to document the procdured to inset a poison capsule into his horn. They were on a private reserve near the capital. Veterinarians were called to sedate the rhinos, their horns were being treated with dye and an insecticide and a tracking identification to be inserted. Spencer was in his mid 20's. The conservation groups in some cases remove the horns to keep poachers away from the nearly exticnt animals. Rhino horns are similar to hair or fingernails and will grow back after several months. In South Africa there were more than 20,000 rhinos. Last year in South Africa about 448 rhinos were killed by poachers.
